About
Since 1954, the Alaska Pulp Corporation has been a part of the Wrangell and Sitka communities.
APC operated the Pulp Mill at Silver Bay near Sitka from 1959 until its closure due to lack of available logs in 1995. A specialty “dissolving” grade wood pulp was produced from defective hemlock and spruce logs not suitable for sawmill use. Pulp was used for the manufacture of rayon textile, cellophane, tire cord, carbon fiber, food additives, artificial leather, pharmaceuticals, disposable diapers and feminine products. Pulp was sold in Japan, USA, Taiwan, China, Mexico, and many other countries world wide.
APC operated sawmills at Wrangell that produced wood products from Hemlock, Spruce, Red Cedar and Yellow Cedar logs. Products were sold mainly to Japan, USA, Taiwan, and Korea. High grade Sitka Spruce was also prized for use in the manufacture of musical instruments such as piano sounding boards, guitar faces and many other types of musical instruments.
Logs were harvested from the Tongass National Forest in more than 50 locations around Sitka and Wrangell.
Alaska Pulp Corporation employed more than 1200 men and women in its pulp, sawmill, and logging activities and was the main employer in Sitka and Wrangell during its years of operation.
